The contention over Jerusalem will last some more days, as indicated by world Muslim leaders in OIC meeting held in Istanbul yesterday. Although, almost all Muslim nations participated in the meeting, but, as expected, Turkey and Iran played heroic role for the gathering. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had called this meeting after Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Minutes of the meeting

In a final statement, leaders of Islamic countries declared East Jerusalem (East Bait-al-Muqaddas) as capital of the State of Palestine and urged all countries to recognize the State of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital. The final statement also rejects the United States’ mediating role in the peace process in the Middle East and calls on the United Nations to revive it with a new mechanism without involving any country biased with one side of the contenders. Almost all participants were agree with the general Muslim perception that the Trump’s decision was null and illegal and this move will increase terror activities in the region.
As expected Iran and Turkey spit fire in the meeting. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on the Trump’s decision: “It was a reward to Israel for its all terror activities in the region.” Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas went one more step ahead saying in threatening tone: “No peace and stability in the region will be discussed until East Jerusalem is considered and recognized as the capital of Palestine.” He added: “We are not going to accept any role of the United States in peace or political process as it is totally biased with Israel.” Mahmoud Abbas called Trump’s decision a provocation to both Muslim and Christian sentiments.

Iran aligned Saudi Arabia with Zionists

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani tried to give a different angle of the total issue. He dissociated Jews and Zionism stating that Muslims and Arabs were not the enemy of Jews in the region but it was Zionism who inseminated dangerous project in the region. Pointing to the Saudi Arabia, he criticized: “Some countries are aligned with the US and Zionists to pillage the rights of Palestinians.” He further tried to convince all Muslim leaders to join hands for Muslim unity to fight against Israel. He said: “We have some differences amongst ourselves but we should not be divided on the issue of the holy place and the Palestinian cause.” Earlier, Saudi Arabia has also condemned Trump’s decision on Jerusalem.
